Functional Skills

Functional Skills qualifications are designed to give your learners the essential English, maths and ICT skills required to participate in life, learning and work.

The idea behind the qualifications is the improvement of your learner’s English, maths or ICT skills so that they can operate confidently in their life and community. As such, Functional Skills is delivered and assessed using situations and day to day events that you and your learners will be familiar with allowing them to develop your skills ready for everyday life.

Qualifications available

We offer Functional Skills qualifications in English, maths and ICT each at a range of levels from Entry 1 to Level 2 so that the qualifications can be taken at the level appropriate to each learner.

The English Functional Skills is split into three components: Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening at each level. All three components must be achieved for your learner to receive the Functional Skills in English qualification. Maths and ICT have a single component at each level.

Examinations

Functional Skills qualifications at all levels are assessed by summative examinations. These examinations are based round everyday scenarios and are generally taken within your centre.

Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3 Assessments:

At Entry Level, AIM Awards Functional Skills assessments are internally marked and Internally verified using the external marking guidance provided by AIM Awards in both the qualification specification and on the marking guidance for each individual assessment.

Levels 1 and 2 Assessments:

At Levels 1 and 2, all external assessments are set by AIM Awards and are externally marked by AIM Awards markers and quality assurance is carried out via the AIM Awards Chief Examiner.
